Hormonal Birds

It’s nearing springtime here, and that may mean hormone season is right around the corner. Here are some tips to help recognize hormonal body language and how to deal.

  • don’t pick up/handle your parrot if his eyes are pinning, he’s displaying, he’s hunched over staring at you with his feet in a wide stance, or if his tail is fanning.
  • keep the same schedules, especially at night. Don’t decrease sleep time, this signals their breeding instincts.
  • Don’t feed soft, warm foods.
  • Don’t begin to allow bathing more since it’s warmer. This signals the coming of rain and an abundance of food; ideal time to pick a mate and defend your territory.
  • Watch his body language. If he’s acting off, use a stick to pick him up or leave him in his cage.
  • Remove any nesting areas and replace any eggs with fake ones.
  • Use common sense, and you won’t get bitten!

Your bird won’t stay this way forever. But they are wild animals and we have to respect their instincts. Here’s to a safe transition to spring!
